French Woman Painting
French Woman Painting
This signed and dated 1875 rural painting depicts a contemplative woman along a coastline, rendered in moody sunset tones. Based on her traditional regional dress, including a dark, modest gown and a white bonnet-style head covering, the woman pictured is likely from coastal Brittany. While painted by an American artist working in New York, the subject matter, costume, and restrained emotional tone strongly reflect French coastal academic realism of the period. The work bears a signature "H.A. Look" signed on the lower right of the canvas and on the reverse which adds “N.Y. 1875: 6.” The painting is in an antique frame marked with a sticker reading "McCaughen & Burr Artistic Framing" and is ready to hang.
Dimensions: 33” W × 42” H × 5” D
There is age-related paint cracking and a few small spots of paint loss to the canvas. The antique frame shows cracked plaster with a noticeable loss at the upper left corner, along with several smaller chips. Please inspect item photos carefully for condition.
